Enviorment Protection, Exhibition, problem solving

This is a school subject that helps Hong Kong Environment Protect Department to avoid  paper excessive consumption  by give out a solution.

Paper waste ↑

In 2012 Hong Kong , we have 1858 tons of paper waste everyday. 37.5% of the paper waste are going directly to landfill.  However, there are only 2513 tons per day in total that Nent landfill can taken. This mean everyday, 27% percentage of waste going to nent landfill is paper waste.

Everyday, there are 13,500 tpd of waste going to the landfill.   In Hongkong, we have three main landfill. Nent landfill, went landfill and sent landfill. All of them close to full.  5 years from now, all of this landfill will be full.

What happened next?

Excessive consumption of paper →

Excessive consumption, or in another term, over consumption, means consumption beyond our needs. Generally, it is a way of consume well above any reasonable level of our physical comfort. There are two main reasons leading to excessive consumption – psychological reason and social reason. In psychological side, it could be the satisfaction of personal needs, and new consumerism, which is defined by Schor (2002) as a new consumer aspiration moved from “comfort” to a norm of “luxury”. On the social side, it can be caused by overpopulation, competitive consumption, conspicuous consumption and culture or traditions reasons.

Responsible consumption is a way to avoid excessive consumption, which expressed through four elements – abstention, attitude, awareness and alternatives. The key issue of responsible consumption is customer. The central model of consumption in market economies has traditionally been that of consumer sovereignty. There are three facts that effect when customer making a purchase decision, which is motivation, behaviour control ability and level of life satisfaction.

Concept Map ↑

The focus of responsible/ sustainable consumption is on the “choosing, using and disposing of goods (and services)” (Salonen, 2013) in a way that minimises the impact on the environment, so that human needs can be met in the present and for future generation. It is believed that when we being mindful and conscious in relation to consumption and production of goods and services, resources will be used wisely and waste can be kept to the minimal.

Paper Prototype ↑

By reflection on people’s daily life, we were thinking to collect average data of paper that people used every day and present it in an art way to not only attract, but also reflection on their own life. We trying to simulate the situation when people use paper product by two type – place and time. We first thinking make a time order for people to think how many paper they are using in a certain time, for example, lunchtime. However, the time order time seems a bit limit, which won’t give as much influents as place does.

We are not only want to open a door for audiences to think about usage waste of paper product, we also want to provide possible solution for them to apply in order to reduce waste. It is necessary to combine the reflection and the information together which convinces audiences to avoid excess consumption of paper product. (Feedback from user test of paper prototype)

Producing ↑

We are more focusing on the paper product that can not be recycled. More specially, they are tissue paper and toilet paper. We want to deliver a message that those paper can not be recycled in different communication form, and give suggutions to avoid excessive consumption.

Behaviour Change Model ↑

No doubt that paper are the excessive things for our daily life, however, over-using of the paper can be leading to overconsumption. To avoid excessive consumption, this leading to change people’s behavior. 、

There are three area that influence behaviour change – social influence, goals & incentives, structure & processes.

However, behaviour change is only the first step of the processes, after that, we need attitude change, and at final will be culture change. Making avoid excessive consumption of  the paper become a culture of Hong Kong , we still have long way to go.
